Can you give me a brief idea about the Program of this Competition?

The Museum will be built on a 50 ha site (470,000 m2), in an archeologically prestigious area that has been placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list: Memphis, together with its necropolis and the Pyramids of Giza, with which the new museum must establish a strong formal dialogue. The complex museum and facilities program must provide three million visitors per year the initial expectation with a vast range of services and information covering the entire Pharaonic period. It must be an enjoyable, entertaining, educational and cultural experience for all visitors, especially children. The latest computer and information technologies must be used to establish archives and data bases for the new museum from the very outset, so that it can be the first global virtual museum, an essential component of an information highway linking Egyptian museums and their visitors, around the world. An overall covered surface of 86,000 m2, the museum must be flexible enough to accommodate not only permanent collections but also temporary exhibitions. More over, it must have the capacity to receive 15,000 visitors per day. The estimated cost of this museum is US $ 350 million.

Who is eligible for entry in the Competition?

The competition is open to all individuals or teams led by individuals who are in possession of documentary evidence of the qualifications for practicing the profession of architecture in their own country or in the country of their residence, and who therefore are legally entitled to take part in architectural design competitions at the date of registration for this competition.
No pre-qualification screening process is needed for elegibility to participate in this competition.

Who is not eligible for entry in the Competition?

Persons who have taken part in preparations for the competition or the writing of the architectural brief, persons who have been involved in the establishment or in the preparation of the program (including the feasibility study), members of the technical committee, employees of the contracting authority, members of their families whether ascendant, descendant or collateral, their partners or persons sharing their professional interests, and members of the jury shall not be eligible for taking part in the competition,either directly or indirectly.
*The persons listed above are also prohibited from participating in the preparation of the successful architectural design, either directly or indirectly.

How is anonymity ensured?

Anonymity shall be maintained throughout the First and Second Phases until the Jury announces its final decision at the end of the Second Phase of the Competition. The UIA has approved the details of the method and procedures for maintaining anonymity.

What does the Competition Brief contain?

project background; history of Egypt; sample of display; the design and functional program; analysis of the program; the project site in terms of location, size, dimensions, and site analysis. Photographs, CAD drawing, aerial views, and a 3D model of the site are all available on a CD-ROM. After registration and payment of fees, the brief and CD will be sent to the exact addresses of participants by courier or express mail during the month of April 2002.

What are the First-Phase requirements of the competition?

The First Phase of the Competition shall consist of a preliminary conceptual proposal, generally outlining and illustrating the design approach in regard to the competition theme.
Competitors must submit a preliminary study (in two copies) comprising of a maximum of 5 A3 sheets (30x42 cm) presenting the idea. Competitors are free to choose the elements that best represent their idea, and also their mode of expression. A written description, a maximum of 5 A4 sheets (20x30 cm), explaining the designer's approach with regard to:
The architectural idea.  The cultural message of the new museum.Proposal for the transport network.

After I register, can I have the brief mailed to me immediately?

In order to give equal opportunity to all competitors from around the world, the UIA has requested a period of 90 days for registration and transfer of fees to the bank. After the 90 days (clearly specified in the announcement as a registration deadline of 7 April 2002), all correctly registered participants (meaning all documents have been recieved and payment has been verfied) will receive the brief and documents by express mail or courier at their exact address. Accordingly, we cannot disclose information from the brief to anyone who may get the start over others.

Online Registration:

1  From the main page, choose English, to reach the English language    Home Page.
2  There is a red icon in the lower left corner of the screen titled "to register", press this icon.
3  Now you are on the "Important Registration Information" page.
4  At the bottom of this page there are two buttons, press the right-hand button "Next".
5  You are now on the Technical Committee page, and you have two options:
     (1) If you are a member, click here.
     (2) if you are a new user, click here.
6  Click on the new user button, to go to the online registration form.
7  Choose a username and a password in order to access your record later and make any
     changes in the data.
8  Fill out the cells of the form.
9  Review all information carefully, submit the form (if everything is correct) , reset the form
    (if you make a mistake), go to "Home" if you decide not to register at this moment.
10 Once you submit the form, you will recieve one of two responses:
    (1) If you miss any vital information you will be warned that some information is missing,
         and you will return to the form again in order to complete the information,
    (2) If you fill the form correctly, you will receive a "congratulations" message and a confirmation that
         you are now a member and your registration form has been accepted.
11 If you would like to make a change in your registration at a later date, you have to re-enter the
     registration form area as a Member and not as a New User. In this case you will be asked your
     Username and Password.
12 Changes to your record will be closed at the time of the closing of the registration period on 7 April
     2002. No changes will be allowed after that date.

How will the jury make its selection?

At the first Jury meeting, the Jury shall elect a chairman, who will appoint a vice-chairman, and shall discuss and determine criteria for the examination of proposals, disqualification of participants and selection of award winners; it shall also determine its own procedures.
A deputy Juror shall exercise the right to vote instead of another Juror in case of short absence from the jury meeting. However, in case of prolonged absence of a regular member, a deputy juror will replace him/her for the remainder of the meeting. The jury will make the decision concerning such a replacement.

Can we change the names of the design team from one phase to the next?

Registration in the First Phase will be separate from the Second Phase. However, a signed waiver from all team members should be in record before competing in the Second Phase. The final composition of the design team will be detailed and signed by all members on a hard copy with final submission of the competition documents by 17 August, 2002.
